Tournament Rules - Backgammon

Game Types

At XcitingGames we proudly present the finest online backgammon experience to you. We offer a wide variety of backgammon games, such as single games, matches, and several forms of tournaments - it's all there at your service, 24/7. And on top of that, remember: at XcitingGames you never play alone.

Single Game

A “single game” is an individual game of backgammon. Every game is settled independently of the others. In single games the Jacoby Rule is always in effect, which means that gammon wins can only be counted when the Doubling Cube has been used. Optional in single games are automatic doubles on starting doublets and the possibility of beavers. These options are shown in the game settings. At XcitingGames we use Table Stakes. That means you can only win or lose what you have at the table.

Match

In a backgammon match the games are not independent of each other. Your goal in a backgammon match is to reach a given number of points, for example 5 points. It doesn't matter whether you win the match 5-0 or 5-4, its just about winning or losing the match.

There is no Jacoby Rule for matches, so you can win a gammon with the Doubling Cube in the middle. When the first player in a match gets to within one point of winning the match (for example 4-1 in a 5-point match) the Crawford Rule will be applied. It says that for the very next game the trailing player is not allowed to use the Doubling cube (the leading player obviously doesn't want to double needing only one point). After that game the trailing player may well use the cube again.

Tournaments

Backgammon tournaments are usually single-elimination events. The players are drawn against each other randomly and play a match to a certain number of points to determine the winner. The winner then moves on to the next round. Sometimes the matches become longer during the progress of the tournament, for example 3-point matches in the first round, 5-point matches in the second round etc.

A backgammon tournament has a fixed entry fee plus a registration fee (for example €10+€1). 100% of the entry fees are distributed among the winners.

There are different types of tournaments:

Jackpots or Sit-and-Gos

These are small tournaments with usually 4, 8 or 16 slots. These tournaments start as soon as the slots are all filled. Jackpots are on offer 24/7 on XcitingGames.

Regular Tournaments

Regular tournaments start at a specific time and can have a lot more entries than jackpots. Registration for these tournaments usually opens one hour before the start of the tournament.

Satellite Tournaments

In a satellite tournament you can win your entry into a larger tournament. For example in an 8-player satellite tournament for €20+€2 you could win your way into a €150+€10 tournament.

Freeroll Tournaments

Freeroll tournaments are regular tournaments without an entry fee. Still you can win something in these tournaments, because XcitingGames sponsors them by adding extra money.
